Presentation Summary

Acreo will present the following

Organic Electronics at Acreo - From Basic Research to R2R Production => The technology platform

  • Acreo and Organic Electronics background; The PAELLA project
  • Center for Organic Informatics (COIN and COE); Partners and purpose
  • Devices and Circuits; Printed devices, antennas and circuits today (EC devices); Future aims at Acreo
  • Development of high volume R2R production processes (EC paper project) and current printing and production at Acreo

The presentation will be given in the form of a CASE STUDY:

Communication technology for fiber-based packaging

Sustainable technology for wireless communication and information exchange within the Packaging life cycle will be presented and discussed. The need of an R2R focus will be highlighted! A technology platform based on R2R printed electronics will be presented and possible application areas might be:

  • Printing to support the distribution chain (i.e. for logistic, product quality, surroundings/environment aiming at tracking & tracing, supply chain management etc.)
  • Printing for security and safety labels in packaging and other paper/board applications (i.e. for authentication, brand protection, sensing etc.)
  • Printing in order to achieve imaging effects such as indicators and up datable display elements (i.e. for communication with consumers, marketing/branding, safety etc.).

Speaker CV

Tommi Remonen has a Ph D degree (1998) from KTH (Royal Institute of Technology) in Stockholm Sweden. His doctoral and Post Doctoral work was within Organic Chemistry on the synthesis of conducting organic materials, both polymers and molecular systems.

He has been working at Acreo since 1999 and has been a member of the PAELLA project (PAper ELectronics for Low-cost Applications) since the start in November 1999. In PAELLA he has been involved in the development work as well as the IPR process. He is a co inventor within numerous "Paper Electronics" patents (around 10) and has been involved in the development process of several new novel device concepts such as transistors, diodes, antennas and display cells, possible to print on to flexible substrates such as paper and plastics.

Since 2003 he is the manager of the Organic Electronics activities at Acreo. The focus of Acreos current activities is towards R2R processing of antennas and organic electronic circuits and displays. Application areas foreseen are new novel products within e-ID solutions and active display labels.
