Presentation Summary

Silver nanowires (AgNW) are widely considered as the best alternative to ITO for transparent conductive films (TCF) for touch panels, e-readers, OLED displays and lighting, thin-film photovoltaics, and smart windows. Carestream Advanced Materials has developed a commercial-scale TCF based on AgNW - FLEXX film - which is manufactured by a continuous roll-to-roll coating process with film conductivities ranging from 10-150 Ohms/□ and transmission greater than 90%. FLEXX films offer higher transmission, greater flexibility and bendability, longer durability, and improved cost effectiveness compared to ITO. For device and module manufacturers, FLEXX film is a "drop in" replacement.
There are still some challenges in developing a successful TCF based on AgNW for printed electronics applications such as OLED and organic PV. This includes achieving high conductivity and transmittance combined with low surface roughness, optimal work function, good stability, and a cost lower than ITO. In this presentation, we will discuss the recent developments at Carestream in addressing these challenges. We will describe a holistic approach adopted by Carestream, covering nanowire synthesis, ink formulation, coating process, and post production processing techniques, to deliver a successful commercial product.

Speaker Biography (Vishal Shrotriya)

Dr. Vishal Shrotriya has been an active member of the printed electronics industry for more than a decade. He is currently a Technical Program Manager at Carestream Advanced Materials focusing on the development and commercialization of transparent conductive films based on silver nanowires for display, photovoltaic, and lighting markets. Prior to joining Carestream, Dr. Shrotriya was with Solarmer Energy for seven years where he was a part of the founding team and served as the Vice President of Strategic Business. He received his doctorate degree in materials science from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Bachelors degree from IIT Bombay in India. He successfully completed the Management of Technology program at Caltech. Dr. Shrotriya has authored more than 30 journal papers and patents, and has written numerous articles in industry publications. He is a regular speaker at international conferences on organic and printed electronics and sits on the advisory committees of industry associations like Organic Electronics Association and FlexTech Alliance.
