Presentation Summary

This presentation explores the investment strength of utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESSs) using new and second-life batteries. A record number of BESSs have been built in Germany in recent years, with primary control reserve (PCR) being the most heavily invested application to-date. Impending changes to the PCR auctions leave the future of these utility-scale BESSs in question. How will existing BESSs respond to these changes? Will BESSs using new or second-life batteries be better positioned to cope with market stresses?

Speaker Biography (Andrew Sloan)

Andrew Sloan is an Energy Management MBA graduate student at Technische Universität Berlin. As part of his thesis research, Andrew performed a comparative investment analysis of utility-scale battery energy storage systems using new and second-life Li-ion batteries. Prior to his graduate studies, Andrew worked in the California waste management sector where he implemented diversion programs and performed waste characterization studies for municipalities, corporations, and industrial facilities.
