Driverless cars are here. It is now a reality in multiple cities across the US that travelers can hail a car that turns up without a driver and takes them to their destination without anyone behind the wheel. Now that these services have become established, they are starting to grow and grow quickly. More cities are planned to come online, operators have access to larger areas within each city, and companies are scaling up their fleets.

This progress is not limited to the robotaxi space. Roboshuttles, autonomous buses, and autonomous trucks are also gaining traction. Autonomous trucks, following years of development and proof of commercial feasibility, are now undergoing testing on regional roads across multiple continents. Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs are actively providing solutions, and key players are rapidly expanding their fleets and operational areas.

Although the roboshuttle industry faced significant downsizing in the past, some operators have managed to persevere and are partnering with local governments to provide services in semi-enclosed and enclosed areas. IDTechEx anticipates that roboshuttles will eventually become an efficient dispatch solution for urban public transit.

Autonomous buses, due to their specific operating models and service areas, have shown comparatively lower market activity than trucks and robotaxis. Identifying suitable environments is crucial for early-stage testing. IDTechEx expects that as Level 3 and Level 4 regulations mature, the deployment of autonomous buses will increase. Automated urban buses are still viewed as a long-term solution for addressing future public transit challenges, such as reducing costs, enhancing safety, and improving efficiency.
