At the recent IDTechEx conference "Electric Vehicles Everything is Changing" in Berlin 2 organisations presented their different approaches to a standard platform for car like four wheel small vehicles.

Mobility Vehicles for the Disabled: Surprises

With an ageing population in developed countries, mobility for the disabled is a key electric vehicle category to follow. The biggest market is Europe, where scooters are favoured and the second biggest market is the USA where power chairs are favoured. Nowadays a mobility vehicle for the disabled is virtually always in the form of a seat on three to six wheels, which is made colourful, attractive and easy to operate.

Electric vehicle value chain is changing

Currently the key enabling technologies in electric vehicles are motors, batteries and control systems. For the next ten years, add to that energy harvesting, supercapacitors (ultracapacitors) and range extenders that replace internal combustion engines in hybrids, notably fuel cells and mini turbines.

Off-road electric vehicles see rapid change

The highly successful manufacturer of conventional off-road vehicles, $2 billion Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) has recently launched a pure electric Neighbourhood Electric Vehicle NEV. Now it has added the leader in that sector encompassing closed communities rather than open highways. Global Electric Motorcars LLC (GEM), a wholly owned Fargo, N.D. based subsidiary of Chrysler Group LLC. GEM is a leader within the low-speed vehicle market, with approximately $30 million in sales during the 2010 calendar year. Since the company was established in 1998, it has placed more than 45,000 electric-powered NEVs on the road worldwide.

Lithium polymer traction batteries, good or bad?

A large and increasing number of traction battery manufacturers are now offering what they call lithium polymer (LiPo) versions. Lithium polymer batteries are being eagerly adopted in a rapidly widening variety of applications. That includes in both pure electric and hybrid vehicles whether on land, in water or in the air. Battery manufacturers in Canada, the USA, Russia, China, Korea, Taiwan and elsewhere are involved.

Over 800,000 pure electric EVs delivered

Pihsiang Machinery is the top graded listed biomedical company in Taiwan. The company recently announced that it has marketed more than 800, 000 "SHOPRIDER" brand electric scooters and power chairs all over the world.
