Alibaba unveils its own AI chip

Alibaba Group plans to launch its first self-developed AI inference chip, which has potential for use in autonomous driving, smart cities and smart logistics. In addition to this, the Academy will boost its R&D in AI chips for training on the cloud and for IOT applications.

Graphene Frontiers awarded grant for roll-to-roll graphene production

Graphene Frontiers, a company developed through the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Technology Transfer, has been awarded a $744,600 grant from the National Science Foundation to develop roll-to-roll production of graphene, the "miracle material" at the heart of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics.

A layer of graphene can reduce the working temperature in hotspots inside a processor by up to 25 percent - which can significantly extend the working life of computers and other electronics.

Early printed electronics revisited

There was an element of back to the future at the hugely successful recent Printed Electronics Europe event in Dresden. Although a high proportion of printed electronics has progressed from screen printing to other printing technologies, notably inkjet, for better control, less waste of these expensive inks and other benefits, at least one company has reverted to advanced rotary screen printing to gain throughput. Indeed, Professor Edgar Dörsam reported that his team has achieved feature size of better than one micron with its advanced screen printing methods. Daetwyler even announced a capability of gravure printing below five microns in feature size with its machines.
