An introduction to genetic engineering

01 April 2020 by Dr Michael Dent and Dr Luyun Jiang
Genetic engineering is a set of technologies used to change the genetic make makeup of cells. It is an important area of biology with a multitude of applications including agriculture, medicine, research and forensics. With advances in technology, the field of genetic engineering is accelerating rapidly. While humans have manipulating the genes of organisms for thousands of years through selective breeding, modern technologies are enabling much greater changes far quicker and cheaper than selective breeding would allow.
