In cities, old fossil-fuelled power stations are valuable real estate, quickly grabbed for myriad other uses. In 2020, Beloit College in Wisconsin began operating a student union and recreation center in a former coal-burning power generator. On the southern coast of Massachusetts, a former 1,600-megawatt coal plant is being demolished to make way for a logistical port and support center for wind turbines expected to be erected about 35 miles off-shore.
