The dilemma of tracking poultry
Oct 12, 2005
Billions of chickens are eaten yearly, Thailand shipping about 400 million. They are very low in cost so that does not justify RFID tagging or perhaps any informative tagging of each chicken at least until technology improves. Thailand is considering RFID tagging every 100th chicken. In September 2005, Uruguay launched a mandatory traceability program for poultry products but family farms that raise chickens for self consumption are exempt. Uruguay only has ten medium to large scale poultry processing plants. Packaging and labelling will now be required that has records written on them.
Food & Livestock Traceability 2006 conference will be held on February 1-2 2006 in Dallas, USA. This hot topic is driven by health scares, bioterrorism and new laws. It will become the largest RFID application but we cover DNA and many other vital technologies as well. For further details please visit {www.trackingfood.com}
