How V2X Makes EVs Distributed Energy Resources

27 January 2025 by Shazan Siddiqi
Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology enables electric vehicles (EV) to act as distributed energy resources, powering homes, grids, or communities through bidirectional charging. This requires compliance with grid codes, a bidirectional onboard charger, and communication with electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). V2X systems can use AC or DC setups, with AC reducing charger costs and DC allowing higher power transfer. V2X adoption is expected to grow, with bidirectional-capable EVs rising from 5% of US sales in 2023 to over 20% by 2028, as OEMs increasingly implement this capability. However, challenges in infrastructure investment, standardization, and consumer awareness, coupled with outdated grid regulations, hinder widespread adoption. This premium article provides insights into the various aspects of V2X technology.
