Lithophane, 3D printing to Enable All Levels of Eyesight to See
A research team has taken a groundbreaking step forward in eliminating the exclusion of individuals with blindness from chemistry education and experiences. The researchers detail how they used lithophane - an old-fashioned art form - and 3D printing to turn scientific data into tactile graphics that glow with video-like resolution, enabling universal visualization of the same piece of data by both blind and sighted individuals.

Floating Artificial Leaves Ride the Wave of Clean Fuel Production
Researchers have developed floating 'artificial leaves' that generate clean fuels from sunlight and water, and could eventually operate on a large scale at sea. The researchers designed ultra-thin, flexible devices, which take their inspiration from photosynthesis - the process by which plants convert sunlight into food. Since the low-cost, autonomous devices are light enough to float, they could be used to generate a sustainable alternative to petrol without taking up space on land.

Lab-Made Cartilage Gel Outperforms the Real Thing
Researchers say they have created the first gel-based cartilage substitute that is even stronger and more durable than the real thing. Mechanical testing reveals that the team's hydrogel -- a material made of water-absorbing polymers -- can be pressed and pulled with more force than natural cartilage, and is three times more resistant to wear and tear.
