Robotic rehab device
Scientist examines the use of non-invasive technology to increase the restoration of arm/hands and leg/ankle movement after neurological injury such as stroke. Along with collaborators he developed interactive robotic assist devices, which move the paralyzed limb when the patient cannot, and knows not to assist when the patient can power the movement.

3D printing the (near) impossible with soluble supports
Since its inception in the late 1980s, 3D printing, or additive manufacturing, has been the subject of intense media attention due to the design and manufacture freedom afforded to the end user. Indeed, this freedom has become so intertwined with the concept of 3D printing that manufacturers will promote their products with the tagline that "complexity is free".

Drones for good: using tech to help save entangle whales
Every fall, pods of enormous humpback whales make their way towards Hawaii, where they can ride out the winter in warm waters of NOAA's Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. For centuries humans have watched this noble migration with awe and wonder. But today, an ever-growing number of these amazing animals are finding themselves in grave danger, entrapped in fishing gear and other marine debris.

Roads need more electricity: They will make it themselves
For now, electricity for road systems is provided by very expensive infrastructure to the grid except for a few solar/ wind street lights in China and Korea for example. However, as more and more capabilities are added to roads instead of simply covering a country with extra roads, they are starting to make their own electricity, notably as solar road surface but then with added silent wind turbines, photovoltaic verges and barriers and more.

Cyborgs are coming: Improved integration of living muscles into robots
The new field of biohybrid robotics involves the use of living tissue within robots, rather than just metal and plastic. Muscle is one potential key component of such robots, providing the driving force for movement and function. However, in efforts to integrate living muscle into these machines, there have been problems with the force these muscles can exert and the amount of time before they start to shrink and lose their function.
